Operating Room/Pre-op/PACU & Clinical Operations
Summary:
The primary responsibilities of this position include the direction of nursing care and all related activities of the pre-op/PACU and operating room areas, providing optimal staffing of the department, performing activities which result in patient and physician satisfaction, coordinating the availability of all equipment needs according to physician requests, providing for maintenance of adequate drugs and supplies, education and supervision of personnel, and environmental control.
I.
POSITION DUTIES A.
Supervises and directs nursing care given to patients within the department, according to nursing principles.
1.
Functions as a role model and supervisor.
Leads by example in attitude, demeanor, work ethic, and decorum.
2.
Acts as a resource for staff, provides support and second opinions regarding difficult cases and patient appropriateness for ASC setting or continuation of care.
3.
Coordinates flow of patients through the department.
4.
Communicates intra- and inter-departmentally:
a.
Cancellations and add-on cases b.
Patient/visitor/surgeon complaints or problems c.
Information necessary to promote safe continuity of care throughout patient's stay in facility.
d.
Need for materials and supplies to ensure the operation of the recovery phase 5.
Develops and implements plans for increased efficiency and for ensuring communication of policies/procedures/protocols and physician preferences among staff in the department.
6.
Communicates and promotes a continuous quality improvement commitment to staff through critical thinking process.
7.
Maintains continuity of care in accordance with facility policies through communications with Anesthesia, and Administrator.
8.
Maintains appropriate standing physicians' orders and ensures staff education regarding their use.
9.
Maintains physician preference files and provides the staff education regarding their use.
10.
Continuously monitors staff to provide for quality of nursing care and improvement of same.
B.
Provides optimal support for Pre-Op/PACU and Operating Room areas.
1.
Prepare daily staffing assignment and delegate duties according to needs to assure the flow and provide safe and quality patient care based on acuity, staff hours, etc.
2.
Make 6-week schedule to publish two weeks ahead of commencement of schedule for preop/PACU and Operating Room Nurses.
Coordinates with Materials manager to staff Surgical techs and SPD.
3.
Assist in staffing area of responsibility or need as needed to meet the needs of staffing (PAT/preop/PACU, Operating room) 4.
Handle call-outs and after-hours staffing changes to meet the needs of the department 5.
Prepare and review Daily Schedule sheet regarding pertinent info for the day (staffing changes due to call outs, supplies backordered, patient specific issues regarding delayed results/preops) 6.
Delegate tasks to staff throughout the day as needed (including but not limited to stocking, linen/making bags, postop calls, data entry, daily and monthly checks, counts, etc) 7.
Coordinate and provide regular breaks for staff 8.
Assure scheduled daily/weekly/monthly checks are completed in a timely manner 9.
Staffs the department on a daily basis on the caseload and other department activities dictate.
10.
Coordinates with Materials Manager for Surgical Technician and SPD coverage.
11.
Plans and directs daily personnel assignments, delegating specific duties and tasks, monitoring their completion.
C.
Assists in the provision and control of supplies and equipment needed for optimal operation.
1.
Assists in control of inventory, drugs, supplies and equipment.
2.
Assists in inventory management and control of narcotic substances.
3.
Maintains a record log of all area equipment, including maintenance and repair records.
4.
Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment, maintaining in good working order.
5.
Observes and communicates needs for new or different items in the department.
6.
Observes use and handling of supplies to decrease waste, mishandling, or incorrect methods and educates staff when necessary.
7.
Evaluate and monitor supplies; Notify supply materials manager of any specific needs.
8.
Assist with medication management to include monitoring medication stock and order necessary meds as needed (can be delegated), updating formulary, pharmacy audits and other necessities.

Promote cost containment and efficient use of personnel, materials and facility resources Job Type:
